Clapping Ban ?

Recommended Posts

In case you thought you'd heard it all, it seems Manchester Uni students union wants a ban on applause , as it may disturb people with "issues". Apparently, you have to wave your hands instead !     :D

Not much use to any blind students attending! Or should that be students with seeing issues?

so it's the zen type of applause then from now on, the sound of one hand clapping.

can just imagine the scene at the concert, "ladies and gentle a big hand for (add celebrity of choice)".......... sound of crickets and the occasional tumble weed..........compère peering out across the darkness and asking " is there anybody there? knock once for yes twice for no"

With so many people dying from applause I'm surprised it's taken this long.

Who dreams this sort of stuff up? I'd bet that this didn't come from anyone affected. If someone genuinely did have an issue with clapping then they should seek professional help rather than expect society to alter it's ways. You could take virtually anything in life and suggest banning it for fear that a minority might be upset or somehow disadvantaged.

On the same day that this was shown, there was a man who said it was his mission in life to get every store in the county to install baby changing facilities in male toilets. When it was put to him that the facility already exists in all female and most disabled toilets he replied that it wasn't acceptable as he may have to ask for a key. Maybe this bloke when to the same university and the clapping girl because clearly he has no sense of proportionality.

Despite everything, he's adamant that his thinking is correct pointing to the number of likes he gets on his Facebook page. I think his likes probably came from the same people who thought BoatyMcBoatface was an appropriate name for a research ship.

Bill :)

Sadly this is the infantalised world we now live in Bill, with the most insane ideas being promulgated as necessities.

You have to fear for the future of this country when all the students have to be concerned about  are outlandish issues such as this. Ear plugs can be purchased cheaply enough for the concert goers to insert during the bouts of applause which will not be as loud as the music they listen to. Imagine sports events without cheering & banter from the terraces ?

This is an extract from the Student Union's latest Press Release on 4th Oct:

"The policy was proposed in order to encourage the use of British Sign Language (BSL) clapping during our democratic events to make those events more accessible and inclusive for all. We are not banning audible clapping – we understand that some people may be more comfortable to continue using it.

Nor are we applying this motion to all events held at the Students' Union. The Union holds a huge number of events, including gigs, theatre productions and sport. This policy has no bearing on those events which make up the majority of a packed calendar at the Students' Union. It is only intended to be encouraged at the Union’s democratic events – those in which our members are invited to participate in decision making which affects the democratic organisation of the Students’ Union. In fact, those democratic events make up a relatively small number of meetings inside the organisation each year."

Oh and it is still barking mad.
