Geoffrey Settle
Well with the ice cap melting due to temperature rises the water has to go somewhere, i.e. rising seal level and/or down pours and floods.
asperity
The antarctic ice cover is increasing year on year actually. And the arctic ice, which melts and recovers annually, is floating so makes no difference to sea levels. How many floods have we had this year Geoff? Oh that's right, it's been a bit dry hasn't it? It's called "weather".
observer
Having watched the Dino Week-end (CH19): It certainly provides a sense of perspective. The planet has been evolving over billions of years, continents have moved, climates have changed, with periodic extinction events, caused by ice ages, volcanic pollution and of course the now famous asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs and 65% life on earth. None of these changed was preventable, creatures had to adapt or die. Mankind imo, needs to concentrate on the threats he can deal with, starting with over-population in a world that hasn't the resource capacity to sustain it. Davy51
Considering ,is it 9 tenths of icebergs are below water level & water expands when it freezes, shouldn't we expect sea levels to fall if the ice cap disappeared from the Arctic ? observer
The more sea water that's locked away in artic ice, the lower the sea level. The last ice age reached down as far as London, with a mile high glacia. If it happens again, we'll all be heading for Africa, wonder if they'll let us in ? ! asperity
Here again you are making the mistake of looking at changes in recent times. I went to our excellent museum a couple of weeks ago and was fascinated to see the display showing the location of Warrington in times past. Millions of years ago Warrington's present location was south of the equator. My point is that the earth and its atmosphere are dynamic chaotic systems. You only have to look at the Met Office's pathetic attempts at long range weather forecasting, using £millions worth of advanced computing power to come up consistently wrong conclusions, to realise that we actually know very little about what is going on. The attempts by our so called leaders to remove more and more of our hard earned cash in the name of fixing problems that nobody can say with any certainty actually exist are nothing short of criminal. They should all be hung from their expensive windmills.

Just WOW!!! I used the expression "in a way" by saying something completely different? Really, is this what passes for common sense in your world of "academic papers"?
