80 mph ?

so with all these safety features you just sit in it and aim in the general direction you want to go and let the car do the rest.

Not at all... I turn some of it off and actually get to drive occasionally :)

To look probably not too far into the future we may see a scenario where accidents & speeding could actually be wiped out by on board technology controlled remotely from outside the vehicle. Obviously it would not be possible until all vehicles are fitted with the technology, but the Highways Agency for instance could slow vehicles down on certain stretches of road to suit weather & traffic conditions. Speed could be controlled remotely in built up areas & any piece of roadside hardware could be used to relay a signal to any vehicle.

Think your right Dave;  centrally controlled traffic movement, like a giant train set;  regulating flows of driverless vehicles. The only requirement to drive would be off-road.

Give a few years and we will all be in automated flying drones instead of cars. They are already trialling a drone ambulance , passenger drones are under test, it is only a matter of time until the jetson scenario becomes reality.

No doubt the lycra mob will be complaining about people landing on their head or such if it does.
