What to do ?

Recommended Posts

Seems the Gov are now hung  up on the Hinkley C Nuclear power Station decision. Gov objectives appear to be:- 1) Maintaining power output so the lights don't go out.  2) Providing affordable (cheap) electricity to British consumers.  3) Moving towards carbon free sources of energy production.  Hinckley seems to tick boxes 1&3; but I'm not sure about box 2 ?

Someone has obviously found a big fly in the ointment to slam the brakes on so abruptly. May be we are getting charged too much for the venture off one of the partners.

This is yet another of those "choice" decisions that Gov has to make from time to time; costing £billions of our money; but the idea of it costing even more in consumption charges in the future; should sound alarm bells.

Probably the way forward would be smaller nuclear power stations but more of them. The problem being, as always, overcoming the objections of the greens and the nimbies.

Think we've been here before Asp;  Nuclear is intrinsically more expensive in commissioning and de-commissioning costs, and a question mark over what to do with the waste.  I thought the Gov were going to go for "fracking" to bridge the energy gap, and they seem a bit slow on hydro and estuary dams ?  This deal seems to allow the Chinese a license to print money at our expense in the future.

Something seems to souring our relationship with China after they are apparently pumping millions into Manchester airport & its surroundings & i believe they are also after investing in Sheffield.

It seems likely that Chinese money could be funding the Northern Powerhouse. Without foreign money HS2 would become just a link to the London commuter belt.

Investment isn't usually something folk do for altruistic reasons Dave;  they pump money in, in order to pump more money out later.

I wholeheartedly agree with the rethink on Chinese investment... especially in something as intrinsic to the national well being and security of nuclear power... have you seen some of the videos out there of the building standards that China deems acceptable???

Their money is the same as everyone elses though and that , I am afraid, is the bottom line.  As we move away from our EU agreements we can expect to be going cap in hand to China all the more.

In all fairness  PJ the deal over Manchester Airport was signed & the first direct flights operating before the referendum so this strategy must have had  the go ahead long ago & with EU approval.

Just wondering when we went "cap in hand" to the EU for anything; when we spent 40 years putting money into it ?    IMF - maybe?

Seems the Chinese Company involved in the Hinkley bid; is now under investigation in the US, with allegations of industrial espionage; so perhaps HMG are being rightly cautious ?
