observer
Well Donald Tusk has just up the stakes: claiming that Brexit and the fall of the EU, threatens the political civilization of Europe; nothing to do with the EU being undemocratic, corrupt, wastefull and incompetent of course. Nothing to do with economic basket cases like Greece being bailed out. Nothing to do with over a million illegal migrants per year entering Europe ? observer
With just over a week to go; it seems the Labour Party are having a last minute panic to save the support for the REMAIN vote: Tom Watson is now saying something needs to be done about the EU's free movement rule. How? Well in this naïve panic to appeal to their base support, they say we "can use our influence within the EU, to change it". What "influence"? With the UK in a minority of one in the Council of Ministers, and the majority adamant that "free movement" will be maintained; the UK has absolutely no chance to "influence" anything. Furthermore, hasn't the PM done the rounds of the EU to try and influence concessions and got next to nothing out of them. In a collective of self interest, it is simply not going to happen, that with up to 50% unemployment in Greece, Spain and Italy, and lower wages in E/Europe; that they will accept any restrictions on their nationals migrating to Germany and the UK. So stay in the EU, and migration into the UK will continue unabated.

observer
... ...... claiming benefits, taking up school places, increasing housing demand, NHS demand. Simply a numbers game at the end of the day, and public services can't accommodate this surge in population growth, of over a million every 4 years. The life boats full, time to take control of it. observer
Make your mind up, thought they weren't taking jobs ? ! Prisoners, unemployed, or stay at home moms and kids, won't be earning, so won't be paying taxes, just consuming them. Enough folk already on the life boat to crew it; and it has a finite capacity. P J
Immigration from the EU nets the country £2 billion a year. You really struggle with this don't you? We already have a points system for non EU immigrants which allows in more than come from the EU. We need immigration Observer whether it sits nicely with your Nationalistic xenophobia or not. Milky
working in the NHS, education, house building, creating wealth, spending money, driving the economy, the life boat is being crewed by the very people you wish to turn away. That is because most are young and motivated. However most are not NHS workers or skilled people they are warehouse and farm workers, waiters and shop workers. In a few years down the line when they start families and get older this will change. Also 2bn sounds a lot of money but it isn't, it won't build all the roads, hospitals, social housing, schools, pay for police, new water sources and so on, for the number coming over each year. It is also damaging the economy of the countries the people are coming from. I never understood why Poland was so opposed to restricting EU travel when it is scraping the bottom of the barrel to find workers for its own industries. Also having said that I do not understand why all the debate is about the EU people coming over when more people are coming over from outside the EU and actually costing the UK tax payer
P J
What is costing the UK economy is the hundreds of billions a year net taken out by the indigenous population. The £2 billion figure takes into account the cost of the services you mention. Britain NEEDS immigration simple Nobody said most are NHS workers, this would be silly like saying most indigenous workers are NHS employees. Migrant workers are helping to staff all levels of employment across the board.
observer
The only reason migrant workers are being poached from their own countries, is simply because it's easier, quicker and cheaper to get skilled labour than train our own youngsters. As one senior industrialist has said, this practice is now rife, and will lead to dependency. Don't for one second accept the £2billion figure, but Brexit will net £10billion for our own use, rather than paying it to Brussels, l so well and truly cancels that out in any case. Britain needs CONTROLLED immigration on a selective basis, to ensure key skills are maintained whilst training programmes can deliver indigenous trained staff. What we have is totally out of control, making any planning or forcasting of service delivery impossible. The economics of the Wendy House. The figures include use of the NHS and other services now, they do not included the hundreds of billions needed to build new facilities. It costs 1.5 million per bed to build a new hospital. They do not include things like increase water and power use or for people in prison or increase in pollution

observer
Seems, in panic, George Osbourne has moved from "end of the world " scaremongering ; to direct threats of punitive budgets, if the British people dare to vote for Brexit. Let's hope the British public haven't entirely lost their Bulldog spirit and won't stand for being bullied or threatened.
