observer Posted December 30, 2015 Report Share Posted December 30, 2015 Baz, methinks housing is being built due to high demand; this Gov is telling the world and it's dog, that they're building more housing than Labour did, in order to tackle the housing crisis; so rate revenues are just a by product. The policy was to build them on brown field sites, normally within existing urban areas, thus not consuming ever more green belt. Alas, many "urban sites" are still within the flood plain; and if flood risks persist, some new approach is required to mitigate such risk. The pressure to date has been to build "out", thus spreading the built up area into countryside, with it's natural soak away qualities; it's now for folk to decide whether they are prepared to accept building "up", providing more living units through high density dwelling provision. or continue in the same old way. The very fact that building takes place and associated road infrastructure carpets the land, compromises natural and historic drainage systems. So, ultimately a consequence of increasing population and population densities; that future generations are going to have to grapple with. On an historical footnote: these issues of human congestion and the desire for habitable space isn't new. Ancient Rome built a sewerage and drainage system, to get rid of a marsh, that eventually became the central forum of Rome. It's growing population of Plebs (around 1 million) were housed in high rise multi-occupancy tenement buildings; so it's all been faced up to before. The cry will be going up about water rationing and why hasn't the government done anything about it.
