The end of Fiddlers Ferry

Does anyone have any idea why it seems to be taking so long to demolish the towers?

In a www report on the subject, it appears that those doing the job are waiting for the council to give planning permission. I know this is a big job and probably needs doing it in stages but given it’s already been decided to demolish and clear the site, all that needs doing is to pick a date.

On FB, concerns were raised over dust and pollution, but surly all these issues would have been discussed and decided on before they even started the job. You’ve got to assume that the council chose a company who were specialist in this field and would know better than anyone all the rules, laws and issues involved.

I’m sure if this were any other country, the job would have been completed by now.

if it had been china they would already have a hotel and a high-rise block of flats built on the site.

given that half the towers have been demolished then demolishing the rest should just be a repeat performance, they know what is involved and all the relevant safety documentation would be almost the same just a different date and time.

it always amuse me that people on face ache will put forward things like 'dust and pollution'. that i only of concern to the residents in a certain area around the site.

i wonder if those same people who are 'concerned' drive electric cars or diesel/petrol?

Fred Dibnah never worried about those things. just pile up the wood and chuck a match at it then wait for it to go. smoke and dust all over the place.

i watched the last lot go down and there was very little dust in the air.

That’s very true Sid but this is Britain, and the wheels turn so much slower here.

I’m all for getting things right and protecting the environment but while we’re told the whole country is at risk of devastating power outages it seems odd that a few bats, newts and a one time bit of dust should be seen as just as important. When you consider what’s happening around the world, these issues are insignificant.

Seems to me that we have too many people slowing things down by demonstrating that they’re beyond reproach and have ticked every box. Reports need to be consulted on, debated, and checked by lawyers just to show that they’ve done their jobs. It’s not like it’s Paddy and Mick doing this job out there is it? They’ll be specialist companies and probably have far more expertise in these matters than anyone at the council.

I just had a look at the planning site and the latest application was submitted on the 8th April. It includes a lot of stuff on the south end of the site but it does not include the remaining cooling towers. That will presumably wait until the things they might fall on including dirty bits and storage tanks have been taken away. The application is 2024/00440/DEM if you are bored. It is not in the least interesting,

having done project planning it can be a nightmare with the logistics.

it probably makes sense to clear each bit before moving onto the next and making sure that the site is not polluted at any stage.

i did note that they are keeping the existing railway line just in case there is a future use for it.

i do wonder if they have look to see if it could be utilised to remove the major debris from the site and save on costs of hiring trucks and drivers and also the green aspect of all the diesel fumes they produce.

fill a dozen or so of train wagons and you only need one driver to remove it from site they could even borrow a steam engine to stop the environmentalists complaining....🤦‍♂️

Good idea to use the railways Sid rather than loads of lorries but you have to wonder if there’s any facilities at the other end to deal with such waste. Just thinking, if they’re ever going to build flood defences or a Mersey barrage then they’re going to have to find a load of foundation materials so something like this might have been an option.

There could even be enough rubble to fill half the towns potholes, although I’ve heard the council have plans to link them all together rather than build more reservoirs😊
