Northern Power House ?

Davy, your missing out on the grand luvvie plan; invite the world and his dog in, all working hard and paying huge amounts of tax, not growing old or infirm themselves btw; so that our indigenous population will be "looked after" in their old age !

The EU immigrants are working hard and are paying into the system and are overall net contributors to the economy, can the same be said for the indigenous population?  The only alternative to the pension crisis would be a Logans Run style culling of humans once they reach a certain age and I don't fancy that, do you?

Yes ,that is why it needs to be our indigenous population that needs to be weaned off benefits where possible & put back into work at the expense of foreign workers who should be looked after by their own governments. This Eurotopian concept is breeding a culture of 3 or 4 countries providing an employment magnet for the rest of Europe. What Europe should be concentrating on is bringing the working & living conditions of these "poorer" countries into line with the wealthier northern European countries then we can all be on a level playing field.

BBC "Hardtalk" interviewed the EU Migrant Commissioner, and PJ will be pleased to know that he shares his ideas and complacency; which explains why the EU has been caught in the headlights on this issue. Steven Saker raised the prospect of millions of migrants entering the EU and the rise of right wing political parties in response. The arrogant reply from this un-elected Brussels beaurocrat was that, politicians should ignore populism and concentrate on sharing the burden of this new much needed demographic. Such an ivory tower response encapsulates the disconnect between the Brussels Mandarins and the electorates of Europe, and reinforces the need to terminate our membership. As for the demographic imbalance, folk are living longer, but not necessarily in good health; which raises the spectre of growing financial burden for society, one that will require funding. Young folk will need to be working and earning to pay for this, which suggests that our education and vocational training system needs to be capable of producing the required skill levels to meet economic needs. IF there is still a demographic deficit, after getting all our youngsters into tax-paying employment, of course, such skills as are required can be selectively imported via tempory visas. But imported labour, doesn't stay young, people grow old and they too would eventually add to the burden, so short term demographic straws are not the answer, they first appear to be.

Meanwhile ,in the Northern Powerhouse heartland, it will be interesting to see what the plan is for the area. Will it be a financial heartland with City financiers travelling in by high speed rail links to take the heat off London? A fantastic altar to the retail trade with glorious shopping malls ? I don't suppose there is a need for heavy industry these days when we can import most of what we need with included installation ?

I do wonder if it is a coincidence that Manchester airport is now wooing China on a big scale along with George Osborne & the Chinese are in the running as energy providers to the UK ? Maybe the Pennines would be ideal in providing hydro electric power ,if harnessed properly, just as the same streams kicked off the industrial revolution? Add a few more wind farms, solar panels & a couple of nuclear plants & we could be energy self sufficient for years to come.
