Dizzy
Not a chance they could ever ban smoking in peoples own homes Obs. How on earth would they know? Anyway the gov make far too much money from tobacco sales to really want to ban it or to convince people to give up.
Evil Sid
not banned in the house of commons bars etc. when they ban it there then people will probably take more notice. Maybe expensive cigars are not as bad for your health.
observer
Diz, it was tongue in cheek; but there's been examples of Council Officers refusing to work in "smoky" houses; and you may recall Social Services taking a kid away from smoking parents. Bazj
Anyway the gov make far too much money from tobacco sales to really want to ban it or to convince people to give up. You say that but tobacco sales have been falling for years and at the last budget the chancellor actually started to tax cars with zero emissions.... they will just get their money from somewhere else. It's what they do
P J
and you may recall Social Services taking a kid away from smoking parents. I recall it and the court was right to take the boy into care. He had recently been prescribed an inhaler due to breathing problems yet when a health worker visited the already poorly child was surrounded by a thick cloud of smoke and the air was so rank that she had trouble breathing. Here is the real clincher though, "The parents seemed unable both at that stage and when the issue of smoking around (the boy) was raised by any other professional, to acknowledge or appreciate the concern and adapt their behaviour." As is usually the case in situations like these there were other concerns regarding the child's treatment other than the smoking.
observer
My point was about the sanctity of one's home.
P J
You are not above or beyond the law in your own home and you cannot put children in danger or harm them just because you are in your own home and you cannot behave just how you fancy because you are in your own home. That would be absolutely stupid now wouldn't it? In the case you brought up, the court made the right decision and you know it, don't you? observer
I'm not arguing the point; merely alluding to the fact that there appears to be no such thing as "private" space.
P J
there is private space, you just can't do whatever you feel like when in it. You shouldn't need a law to tell you that smoking in a confined space with a child is a deplorable way to act. Such is the addiction of these people to their drug of choice they can't see how wrong and nasty it is .
observer
Well we can agree on one thing - "you shouldn't need a law"; which was my original point.
Eagle
Common sense seems to be a thing of the past.
P J
It does indeed, just dropped my little girl off at school and a Mum in a merc parked next to me, fag in mouth, 2 small boys in car. Scum.
Davy51
Lacking common sense & concern for the health others around you maybe , but legislation against smoking at home is ridiculous. One of the biggest dangers to health are the diesel Chelsea tractors ,especially on "the school run" & at rush hour that pollute towns & cities & make walking down the street more of a health hazard than walking into a smoke filled room. P J
, but legislation against smoking at home is ridiculous. They haven't
Evil Sid
On a slight tangent. i see that volkswagon have just had to recall a load of cars in america after it was found that they had a cheat mode on the emissions. when tested the emmssions were fine but once the test was over the car computer reverted back to a higher emission setting. if there then here? observer
Think they've worked out that air pollution is now a major killer.
P J
what about air quality in a car when someone is smoking?
observer
Not really an issue, if the so-called fresh air outside is basically toxic too !
P J
Not really an issue, if the so-called fresh air outside is basically toxic too ! utter cack
observer
Yes the air is full of it, it's destroying the health of us all !
P J
So smoking is ok around children as there is some air pollution mainly in cities? Unbelievable how ridiculous your need to defend your drug addiction has made you.
observer
Trying to twist others comments maybe your style, but I don't condone smoking in front of kids; and I'm merely alluding to reports of levels of toxicity throughout our road system, which is hazardous to health. P J
I am glad to hear it, so no smoking in a house with children is what you advocate then?
observer
But I wouldn't expect it to become law, there's much more important matters around.
