Giant Hogweed..... evil stuff and I remember someone saying there was some along the Trans Pennine Trail last year.  Has anyone seen any more anywhere round Warrington as I think you are supposed to report it.

Surely they are not just trying to fill newspaper space and it looks a blummin' dangerous plant to me.

Maybe it's only ever reported this time of the year (or silly season as you call it) because this is (perhaps) the time of the year when the plant grows and flowers

Not a newspaper I would normally read but they keep giving them away for free in our corner shop and today I quickly skimmed through it.

Hogweed.... poor kid :(

Oh and I forgot I'd taken a photo of what I though may be some in the carpark of the dogs home on Slutchers Lane the other week but I wasn't too sure at the time.   Having just looked at my pic YES IT IS

I might go back tomorrow and see if it's still there and if to let them know to be careful and to somehow get rid beifre any kids touch it....

they would probably identify it but then would spend the next six months having meetings to decide how to tackle the problem by which time it will have gone away and the problem would be solved until next year when it grows again buit then that will be a problem for next year.

now then just a thought maybe a few bods in those big yellow hazmat suits turning up at atraveller camp might be a bit cheaper than dragging a case through court. don't have to tell them why they thre just turn up lokoing all official and wave the odd bit of bleeping machinery around and who knows.

I've seen this stuff over on Woolston Eyes, it looks like a smallish, rather exotic greenhouse plant and really does look alien against the rest of the native flora. As I understand it it's not the chemicals from the plant itself that cause the burns but the resultant removal of any natural UV protection.

Just seen this online from today and great that WBC are taking the issue seriously (unlike Gary :P ).

The council have apparently been down to the pathway that leads along the River Mersey to the transporter Bridge and have put warning signs up about the Hogweed.  Seems there's a lot more round there than just the one I saw.

The photo below is NOT mine but I'm sure the Transporter Bridge people wont mind me copying it as I know some people on here never click on links.  It taken from here.... great website about the transporter bridge :D

Sky news too today (actually just seen the time so now 'yesterday;).

They say that 'Under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to plant or promote the growth of the plant and landowners must have it removed by specialists if it is found'.  Over to you WBC to sort or mention that to whoever owns the land and path to the Transporter Bridge for starters if it isn't you.

Maybe the council could add another form to their online reporting service via their website where people can report giant hogweed.  Maybe they could plot all reports of it on a local map too to see just how quick it is spreading year by year.

found this in the express. quite interesting to see that the map seems to stop showing cases reported from 2010 onwards.

Good link Evils.  When I just looked it was showing cases from 2010 onwards and showed there have been 1128 so far.

There is a link to an 'app' on there too that people can download and record sightings of various plants including giant hogweed.  I clicked on it and it brings up the 'plant tracker' page and another map which shows verified signtings of the stuff and the spread.    http://planttracker.naturelocator.org/content/results

I was going to add ours but my my PC and mobile phone don't use 'apps' so I can't.  Bugger... .

I clicked on Japanese Knot Weed too and that's clearly taking over the whole country but at least that's not dangerous...

  • 1 month later...

There was quite a lot along the Trans Pennine trail a few years back too not far from Walton.  Some cyclists reported it and Peel Holding were informed but I've no idea if they ever did anything about it as I never go along there.

Good article here that shows how it survives and re grows year after year and can lie dormant in bad weather then emerge
