New Labour Tax the Poor.

I don't think the 1945 Attlee Labour Government expected to win that election either, but it didn't stop them clearing up the mess left by war, righting the wrongs of a class ridden society and introducing the welfare state. Perhaps they had a passionate belief in their convictions and an altruistic view of their part in improving the wellbeing of their fellow man?!

Their altruism was stronger than their avarice, certainly in the case of Labour in those days, as for the Tories, it was accepted that greed was simply the nature of the beast.

Thats true, and over the years the Tory name has been used to describe political parties at both ends of the political spectrum. However calling someone a robber doesn't make it true anymore than calling someone a socialist would mean he has your best interest at heart either.:wink:

Sadly I have now lost all hope that a socialist party represents this country, or ever did.

The nearest we've ever come to a "socialist" Government was the 1945 Attlee Government, which slayed many dragons and left a worthwile legacy in the welfare state - sady, subsequent, short termist, tory governments have sacrificed our collective wellbeing at the altar of individual avarice.

as an independent parish councillor I am thinking of using it as a logo should the need arise, far more altruistic than a rose or torch don't you think? :D

The torch got changed to an Oak tree...interesting really as the Oak is the climax vegetation of England and the lowlands of Scotland....although if global warming does occur that might have to change to the Cedar or Palm tree.:D

You are indeed right about the Attlee Government...and at a time the UK was in effect bankrupt through WWII, and history does and will judge it rightly as one of our greatest Governments given the circumstances of the day. However when I look around the world, the legacy of socialism is not a good one, indeed the personal avarice of socialist leaders is unbelievable and disgraceful.
