observer
Seems the two year watch by the Met on Mr Assange, bottled up in the Equadoran embassy, has cost the British tax-payer around £10million. The Swedes want him first, so the Yanks can extradite him to stand trial for leaking embarrasing State secrets. So perhaps the UK Gov could claim the costs from the Yanks?! Bazj
About time they just kicked the door down and went in and grabbed him..... I mean Ecuador are hardly likely to pose a military threat to us......are they ????
observer
Not quite the point Baz. It's all about the Yanks wanting to get their man; so perhaps they could start paying the costs.
P J
I'm sure they could but it's not really legal. What worries me is how come it costs £5 million a year to watch an embassy door. Even if it has 2 doors and you have 2 bobbies watching each that's 1.25 million each per year. Now I know that police , fire etc have ridiculously generous pensions but this does seem excessive ???? Evil Sid
but why have any body over there to watch. There are webcams that i can watch that stream live from new york and other areas as well, good quality video with zoom and pan and tilt facility. seems a bit daft to have a guy standing across the road pretending to read the newspaper for hours on end. P J
He's hardly likely to be nipping down to Tesco Express for a Daily Mail anyhow so why bother at all. Leave him a window of opportunity to go and if he does happy days. If not stop the surveillance and stop the ludicrous headlines
observer
This is just one case of 24/7 surveillance that's been highlighted; if we assume similar costs for all the other "anti-terrorism" surveillance; the cost to the taxpayer must be enormous? wahl
If I were in charge ,I would give the Met people a 24 hour pass, tell the Peruvian embassy of this and expect Assage to be removed top the southern hemisphere a toute vitesse and sod the stupid judiciary.
