Latchford Locks
So, we've already got boozers with seating outside; so why increase their numbers? You need to think back to when "no alcohol" zones were first being advocated; it was a time when a myopic Labour Gov scrapped closing times, And that was when the nightmare began

Lt Kije
So, we've already got boozers with seating outside; so why increase their numbers? You need to think back to when "no alcohol" zones were first being advocated; it was a time when a myopic Labour Gov scrapped closing times, which resulted in the ruination of most Town Centres in the Country; and the antics of dead heads where shown nightly on TV news. That may have reduced somewhat, as most of the performers will now be awaiting liver transplants. As for heaters, not sure they work Diz, which leaves the idea dependent on the weather (Summer only); although we may get some sun this week-end, according to reports. What a knob Pubs these days are a place people go after they have gorged at home.
observer
Sure your Mum was delighted, then turned on those that got her selected - but we digress.

observer
Forgot Kije's offering, with that distraction: Kije, if they load up at home, they'll be even more smashed when they get into Town - hence their antics.
Egbert
PJ has made a useful point - youths have always congregated where it was trendy to be. They did it in my day. But the difference is in those days the "trendy" places were milk bars with a juke box. Soft drinks only were on sale. Now I have no doubt that if similar places serving alcohol had been available, they would have soon put the milk bars out of business, but they weren't, so the young people of the day were happy to stay free of alcohol. That is what's wrong today - too many places where there is an unrestricted sale of alcohol (to which the council apparently wants to add more) while soft drinks have become very "untrendy." It will be interesting to see if the council's proposed "youth zone" can make soft drink more trendy - but I suspect it won't. It will cater for the "young" teenagers, not the older ones who would sooner be in Bridge Street (along with the older idiots who, as several people have pointed out, are there en masse)
P J
So Egbert, would your solution be Prohibition? That worked a treat. What era exactly are your rose tinted memories of?
P J
Cafes, may I add won't be open at the hours that the young revellers hit the town, it will be a daytime , early evening. I imagine it will be slightly more expensive to drink there than a pub so the ardent drinkers will still be found lashing up in Wetherspoons etc.
P J
Also Egbert, isn't there a worry about the energy drinks the young people are drinking? Sure they aren't alcoholic
P J
What I do find ironic is that the same members who gripe and whine about pubs closing down are now whining and griping about new cafe bars opening. Go figure

Egbert
No PJ, I am not advocating prohibition ... other than prohibition of under-age drinking which I believe still exists, even if not always observed. The era I am talking about is the 1950s. I have no rose tinted memories - but I know that most young people were quite happy with the cafe culture that existed then. You see, what you've never had, you don't miss. I certainly would not swap my youth for that of today's youngsters. Energy drinks? I don't know, but you shouldn't need them when you are young. I never did. Cafes? If the demand is there, they'll open. As for griping about pubs closing or bars opening - I don't think I'm guilty of either. But what we need in the town centre is shops. Incidentally, do you enjoy being obnoxious?

P J
But what we need in the town centre is shops No, what we need is people with money to spend in the town centre which we are presently in rather short supply. Build or open as many shops as you wish in town and it won't matter a jot unless there are people buying their wares. Supply and demand finds its own level. Incidentally were there more pubs in Warrington in the 50's than now?
