Dizzy
Beats me Ann. I hope nobody gets hurt either and the residents, workers and shoppers around there must be on pins all the time. Surely if these travelers are are threatening people and everything else that is reported then they should be arrested. We'd all be arrested on the spot if we did that sort of thing. Different rules for different people and that is WRONG !!Saying that it would probably really kick off if one of them was arrested and locked up for the night.
Bazj
The police and the council would rather pander to these criminals and turn a blind eye to their dealings rather than get involved.... sad but true.... they just hope they will up sticks and clear off before too many people get robbed and so affecting their crime statistics

Normally when I see a statement that begins "Oh dear" I tend to think that the person making it is being a bit tongue in cheek about the statement made. If offense has been caused then I apologise. if it just confusion that has been caused then that is standard fare for any polictically minded person. I have witnessed altercations on travellers sites with the police and people on both sides can get hurt.
inky pete
The fact that they have no respect for the law or those charged with upholding it is no reason to treat them with kid gloves.
Sheila_P
They have been moved on now. I was at the tail end of their convoy earlier. It must have cost a fortune in resources. Lots of blue light police cars, plus a helicopter overhead.
Bazj
A copper who lives near me reckons there were about 20 police vehicles in attendance today.... maybe they should send the bill to the "travellers"!
Dizzy
Where have they moved on to ?
Sheila_P
Someone reported seeing vans hitched to caravans going up the M6. They would have to be on the southbound side because they turned left at the end of Woolston Grange Avenue. The police blocked off Manchester Road, to give them a clear run. Sheila_P
Some more have moved onto Woolston Park.
Dizzy
Any idea if they the same ones who were on Woolston Grange (re the police alert I posted on Friday) or a completely new lot Shiela ?
Sheila_P
From what I can gather, they are additional. I read earlier that more had moved on to the park, yesterday.
fugtifino
Maybe they're on their way back from the celebrations, I've just heard they're now on Peel Hall Park.
Dizzy
Oh heck I hope they aren't the same troublesome ones. They should change the rules so that once they have been officially moved on from a town or village they can be moved on immediately and without the need for court orders (or whatever they are) if they ever return. Saying that they probably all change their cars a lot so no point in checking car reg...... the police etc should spray smart water on their caravans or their kids when they aren't looking so they could be identified that way
wolfie
You would think that someone would have set up a 'traveller finder' site similar to 'planefinder' and 'shipfinder'.
fugtifino
That could be a lucrative business opportunity there, wolfie. You could use clothes pegs instead of stars for the ratings.
inky pete
The police and other authorities could end this farce in a single day if they wanted to. Full roadworthiness, insurance, road tax, MOT, driver licencing and ownership registration checks on all vehicles - including caravans - on a squat site. Impound and then sell or crush all vehicles which are or have been observed to be on the road illegally. Full safety checks and operator training documentation checks on all plant and equipment found on site. Full tax and benefit audits on all adults found to be on site. School attendence checks on all children on site. Use the sale proceeds and fines to defray past policing and clean up costs.
Dizzy
All that would probably be against their human rights though Inky if the police had no other reason to check their details apart from the fact they are 'travellers'
inky pete
But they'd only be doing a random check of any and all people and vehicles present within a particular area of public property on a particular day.
Dizzy
Maybe they're on their way back from the celebrations, I've just heard they're now on Peel Hall Park. Apparently there was a fire there a few hours ago I wonder if it's related. Could just be that someone has thrown a cigarette down or something though as grass is very dry everywhere at the moment. Sha
Inky writes......"The police and other authorities could end this farce in a single day if they wanted to". I think it would take longer than a day but the police and other authorities could certainly end the "farce" which repeats year on year and should have done so many years since. As for the travellers being clued up on human rights and knowing nothing of planning law (Wolfie's post) I think that traveller's, the police and other authorities are all equally clued up on all of the relevant issues. The only people who seem to be not clued up are the general public! The reason the travellers are going onto public land is because they know that in this area the 'authorities' have not made the required provision of a travellers site. Thus, they have a counter argument to allegations of trespass (on public land). However, what they do not have is the right to trespass on private land as landowners also have 'human rights' - the relevant right in this case being 'the right to peaceful enjoyment of their own property' which over rides any human rights the travellers have as one cannot enforce a human right if in doing so it denies another of their human rights. I've personally found that once the travellers realise that the land they are occupying is privately owned and the landowner is fully aware of his rights they move on pretty sharply. However, I have also found that the police rather than informing the landowner of his rights will quote the 'human rights' of the travellers. Are the police officers not well enough informed on human right law or is it just less hassle? Perhaps the police realising that the travellers will only leave the area when they are good and ready think it's pointless to just shuffle them to multiple sites? The problem here though is for the landowner who has to pay the clean up costs out of his own pocket - and specialist clean up companies are not cheap. Perhaps if the landowners started claiming clean up costs off the council they might pull their fingers out and allocate a specific travellers site, which in the long run would be cheaper and less hassle. observer
Thought they had been allocated land? They did occupy a site near the Walton Arms for a while, but were eventually moved off due to a planning judgment. Some individuals have bought pockets of land and set up permanent residence. But isn't the point of their mobility to avoid all the costs incurred by the rest of us, EG Taxes etc? Just another of the joys of a diverse society ! Dizzy
The site near the Walton Arms is still there Obs and I'm not sure why you think they were eventually moved off but they most certainly never have been. They have been there for many years now (about 20 years now I think from memory) but to be fair to them they have never caused any trouble and are usually friendly and polite whenever we see them in the local shop. They are nothing like all the more objectionable sorts that often descend on Warrington.
