Egbert
t-h-e-y-w-e-r-e-b-o-r-n-h-e-r-e I was not referring to these two particular guys but to the fanatics who want to commit acts of terrorism against the West (and us in particular) generally. No-one has come up with any suggestions. Does that mean that none of us know what we have done to offend a minority of Muslims?
asperity
I don't think we actually have to do anything to offend them. They just find our very existence offensive.
Freeborn John
Been there, got the T shirt. £7 off a stall at a bike show, it's got 'Infidel' in big letters across the front, the bloke said "You do realise you're beyond salvation now, matey" as he took the money. I thought at the time he whiffed of sulphur a bit...

Davy51
To be honest apart from plundering their homelands & throwing in some rape & pillage ,in a historic sense ,i fail to see what a modern Muslim would have as grounds for contempt for our society. These people have been welcomed with open arms ,fed ,clothed ,housed & given access to jobs or a benefit system & the best & cheapest health care & education in the world .That way of life has to be better than one of disease ,starvation & poverty which is the norm for anyone but the most well connected (corrupt) people in these third world orifices of stagnation. Davy51
I am sure Egypt is wonderful especially with Cleo bathing in asses milk several times a day , but i was thinking more of the poorer states that are ideal as breeding grounds for militants. Davy51
It seems the confrontation is now threatening to affect Israel's Golan Heights & Iranian backed Hezbollah fighters are being used by Assad's government so any intervention by the west could result in direct confrontation with Iran in time. Davy51
The situation in Syria looks a bit tricky now with Obama coming out in favour of supporting the freedom fighters, considering the Syrian government is enjoying support from Hezbollah which is backed by Iran which has just elected a leader who wants to improve relation with the west. observer
In effect, we now have a middle eastern, Islamic sectarian civil war. It may have started with peacefull opposition from a middle class secular opposition to a secular Dictator; but has now been hijacked by sectarian factions to the point, we are now looking at an Islamic civil war. Obama has just dug the US out of holes in Iraq and Afghanistan, so no rational President would want to dig another in Syria. The spurious excuse for intervention; the "red lines" over WMDs; was merely to give him time to ponder; after all, we know from Iraq how bogus allegations about WMDs got us involved; and even if true, being killed by chemicals or by bombs - is still being killed. Over 90,000 people have been killed up to now, and supplying weapons will merely extend the conflict and the casualties imo. What started as a peacefull secular opposition to a secular Dictator, has now been hijacked by sectarian extremists on both sides; with the same deranged and anachronistic beliefs as the Woolwich murderers. So, much better, on balance, to allow the Assad regime to win (which they are now doing) and then pursue political and diplomatic initiatives from a stable platform. If the international community want to help relieve suffering, they should be supporting aid to the refugee camps in Turkey and Jordan; not supplying arms to prolong a civil war.
