Veteran comedian Jimmy Tarbuck has been arrested in connection with a historic child sex abuse allegation, sources said.

Tarbuck, 73, was questioned by North Yorkshire Police on April 26 in relation to an incident which allegedly occurred in the late 1970s in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, when the victim was a young boy.

The TV personality's name had not been revealed until the Daily Mail named him on Sunday night. It is understood he was arrested at his home in Kingston Upon Thames, south-west London, and released on bail.

I think this line will run probably for many more years yet, with more and more elderly celebs being accused of something that happened 30 to 50 years ago. They are always celebs, aren't they? Why is that?  It is costing a fortune as a lot of police time is being taken up with it, and, of course, the inevitable claims for damages/ wrongful arrest will follow if the accusations cannot be proved. And claims could be very high due to the damaging publicity of naming the accused before any charges or court appearances.

Guilty or innocent, these washed up celebs are easy meat, I dare say most of them are half skint these days, and being in their 70's and 80's there's not much fight in them.

The only big fish that the authorities attempted to fry, a certain multi millionaire business/political figure, ripped them apart and brought the BBC management to its knees, they won't be going there again.

There will be more lightweights though...soon.

It's going to be almost impossible for anyone to get a fair trial almost 40 years after an alleged event, with no forensic or written contemporary evidence, it's always going to come down to one person's recollection of events versus another. Even if there are multiple "victims", how is it ever going to be possible to rule out collusion between them?

And given the media frenzy over these cases which means that the accused are instantly being presumed guilty before they're even charged never mind convicted.

Isn't there a case for both anonymity on both sides until conviction in ALL criminal proceedings, and a Statute of Limitations to recognise how problematic such old cases are?

Well, one thing is for sure, there are a lot of shattered lives on both sides of these investigations.

I think that the people accused should be brought to trial quickly.  If the complaints are substantiated, then these men need to pay the price, whatever that price will be.

However, if they are innocent, they have been hung out to dry, with their careers in tatters. They need to be given their lives back.

I really do think it's time that the police dug a little deeper and found the people who were facilitating this, those in the background who, so far, are flying under the radar.

Do we really have to have this kind of topic discussed here?  Surely there something else of more interest.

If you're not interested or find such matters distasteful  then there is no need to join in , it's not compulsory.

Why not start a thread in the General Chat section on , for example, the joy of thimble collecting or your favourite corn dolly  * .

* assuming such pagan fertility rites aren't  a bit racy for you.

Prosecution and defence barristers/lawyers are going to make a killing on this debacle, along with the press of course.!!!
