Davy51
I used to drive for a well known High St name that supposedly sold nothing but British made goods & it was an eye opener when going to the shops to see the amount of stock with shipping marks on the packaging. It's been going on for years ,long before Primark & Matalan etc.
Lt Kije
I half agree with you Asp, but most of the big companies are owned by the West, with a few notable exceptions..

observer
It seems the Pope thinks they were on "slave wages", if that means anything to anyone!
asperity
So it seems that a few people on this forum believe that first world countries should leave the peasants in third world countries to subsist in shanty towns scratching a living from the paddy fields instead of giving them a chance to increase their standard of living towards that enjoyed by the first world. Colonialists.
observer
Not quite Asp; it took hundreds of years for British workers to get the political and social rights they now take for granted; and to get health and safety standards in the workplace improved to modern civilised standards. I think it seems reasonable to expect those standards to now be applied globally, so that Indian workers don't have to suffer similar hardships for the next hundred years. China and India now have a thriving middle class, and more, a thriving rich list, plus overseas aid from us; so I would think they are perfectly positioned to spread that wealth to poorer workers, trying to exist on "slave wages". asperity
Why do you think that they are going to suffer hardships for another hundred years Obs? Because it suits your argument? Realistically these countries are set to overtake the first world in prosperity and all the benefits this brings (including safe working practices) in a few short years. We have given them a head start with all the technology that the developed countries brought about through hardship.
observer
I didn't say the would, I said "it seems reasonable" to apply modern western standards now; hence criticism of slave wages and poor workplace safety.
asperity
so that Indian workers don't have to suffer similar hardships for the next hundred years You should try reading what you said, or think more carefully about what you're saying. The wages of the so called "slaves" are rising at a phenomenal rate and conditions can only improve. But we are no longer the colonial power able to dictate to the natives about how to run their countries, it's up to them to evolve not up to us to force them to do it. observer
Agreed, but not with us paying in overseas aid eh?!
asperity
Overseas aid is another matter altogether, and paying it doesn't, apparently, give us any influence over the governments we give it to.
