  1. I don't suppose by any chance the kiosk is still in Viccy Park? The one with the flat roof. Also there used to be allotments when one took a short cut from the back of the park through to Kingsway. Are they still there does anyone know?

  2. I was just reading something about the pie place on Gordon Gandy's website, My Warrington. Someone was saying there was a shop on Winwick Rd called Dolly Berry's which used to sell all kinds of different stuff like ribbons and things and that just down from that was a fabulous pie place where the girls from Mac Beatties used to buy their lunch. I think that must be the place. Can anyone tell from that which one it would be then?

  3. Thankyou for all those suggestions. I didn't realise there were that many around that area. I'm still not sure which it would have been. The pies we usually got were the ones with mince in the bottom and potato on top. They call them potato pies here in Oz but they aren't as nice as pommie ones. I think the same place used to also sell bread and butter but that could have come from somewhere else nearby.

  4. This is a bit of a long shot as not many people seemed to know about Macarthur Beattie but I worked there for a short time in 1965 I think it was and once a week we would order pies from a place nearby. I'm sure it was an actual pie factory. Some of the girls would go and bring them back on a big wooden tray. They were absolutely wonderful and I'm wondering if anyone knows the place I mean.

  5. I was visualizing it as being opposite the co-op hall but I was thinking the hall wasn't as far down the road as that. I remember being able to see the name on the side of the building across the road. Thanks for that guys.

  6. Didn't there used to be a paper mill in Warrington? I remember going there once on a school outing but I can't remember exactly where it was. I seem to recall it was somewhere near town though.

  7. Well, it's rather a relief to know that the situation is just as confusing for people still living in Warrington. I notice that Howley doesn't seem to exist anymore either. I remember there being an off licence there in the old days that my dad used to cycle to. As I recall, all the streets were cobbled then. I can't even figure out where it used to be now when looking at maps.

  8. No. I'm afraid no swimming pool either although once again a lot of people do have them. We used to have a smallish one but the maintenance is a pain. checking ph levels and putting the right amount of chlorine in all the time and cleaning it. Also in summer we have water restrictions so that can be a problem too.

  9. Observer, you asked before about aircon over here. Actually we don't have it in our place, we just use fans as it is cheaper. Electric bills are going through the roof so aircon is out as far as we are concerned although a lot of people do have it. They are predicting bills will rise by 64% over the next 3 years so we are always looking for ways to cut down on usage.

Thankyou Peter T for your input.

  10. You asked how long since I lived in Warrington. Well it's over 40 years so I've actually lived in Australia much longer than I lived in England. I still don't really think of myself as an Aussie though and have never got naturalized.

  11. I was born in Broadbent Ave Latchford when my parents lived with my grandparents. Then we all moved to Garnet Ave before my parents got their own council house in Richmond Avenue. We were there about 7 yrs I think and then went to Buttermere Ave in Orford before emigrating to Oz. I didn't really want to come but my sister was only 15 and we were very close so I didn't want to stay in England without her. I got used to it though and stopped thinking about going home. It helps that I married another Pom over here. I think it is street view which has got me all nostalgiac about Warrington. I would like to go back for a visit but circumstances have never been right. I think I will have to wait until my Dad passes away before I can make it.

I remember the Stockton Heath fair but can't quite remember where it was held. I seem to recall it wasn't far from my old high school which was in Loushers Lane.

  12. I remember the Blue Candle being upstairs. Hopefully somebody else will remember where it was.

As for the Heaven n Hell, I am rather confused. I used to go there regularly while it was there (which wasn't very long) and I don't remember it being in Bewsey St. Also, I don't remember anything about it being mods in one part and rockers in another. It was just all one place as far as I remember and there wasn't any trouble. We just turned up one night and it was closed without any warning or explanation and we were all very disappointed.

I thought we used to walk down Sankey St and turn left somewhere to get to it which wouldn't lead to Bewsey St would it? Or maybe old age is finally starting to get to me, lol. Does anyone know the address of the old liberal club?

  13. I've brought up this subject again because of the news item a few days ago about the marijuana plants in the disused cinema in Powell St which I assume is the Premier. Does this mean the old building is still there? If so, whereabouts in Powell st is it? I can't find it on street view. All the buildings look new to me.

  14. Yeah we've seen it on the news. People over here are complaining because they can't go on their European holidays. Actually I probably wouldn't like the cold, wet weather anymore. Even though I'm not an outdoors person I do love the summer over here. Things seem much more cheerful when the sun is shining.

  15. Thanks Sid for the link.

To Observer, I'm a bit past laying on the beach I'm afraid. Did a lot of that when we first came here but finished up with a skin cancer a few years ago. Not a beach person any longer. It is now Autumn here anyway although we are still having nice weather. It's been in the mid 20's the past week. Never really been a very outdoorsy person though. Much prefer to stay indoors and read a good book.
