algy
This is an old clip from an incident that happened in 1997 in an Istanbul shipyard that I have uploaded to Youtube today, it illustrates the devastating ferocity of a fire on board a bulk carrying crude oil tanker and by today's standards this was not a Mega Tanker. Only 250 tons of 500 remaining in the holding tank ignited the other 250 ran into the harbour, imagine if the ship had been at sea or offloading with a full load of 86,000 tons of crude oil. The MV Tpao flagship oil tanker of the Turkish oil tanker fleet, while undergoing maintenance caught on fire and suffered a catastrophic explosion on 13/02/97, although there were injuries there were no fatalities. The Tpoa was originally built and named the Punta Mare and carried that name until Feb 19th 1985 then changed here name to the Transoceanica Giovanna until March 23 1989 and then she became the Tpao. The ship was scrapped after this accident. May be of interest to Asp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYY-_eOAS_k&feature=channel&list=UL
Cleopatra
Why were they pumping water onto burning oil?
algy
Why were they pumping water onto burning oil? Probably to cool the steel down and they certainly would not have sufficient foam available to blanket the oil to suffocate the fire, although small oil fires may be extinguished by the application of foam, large fires on oil tankers can be controlled by putting a fine water mist spray over it as long as it is contained in a tank or vessel but once it is free running onto the water it is a pointless exercise. asperity
Interesting Algy but, unfortunately, not unusual specially in repair docks. Tuzla is a major shipbuilding and shiprepair port in Turkey. There have been several serious fires and explosions on tankers recently. Water is the most effective fire-fighting medium for a large oil fire when the scale is to big for using foam. Quantity rather than quality. Doesn't hold true for chip pan fires although the deep-fat friar on my ship has a fixed water spray extinguishing system.
Dizzy
When you say your fat friar has a fixed water spray I hope you don't mean he is expected to pee on flames to put them out should the need ever arise Asp Make sure he drinks plently of water
