Which are the easiest (locations) places to draw cash from a debit card in the UK, specifically the north west? My card is not related to any institution in the UK, so I know that I'll have to pay for the service. About how much are the average charges? Hope you can help me, thanks. Dizzy Posted June 21, 2017 Report Share Posted June 21, 2017 Sorry I have no idea either Stallard with yours not being a UK debit card but I do know we could still use our debit cards if we were ever lucky enough to travel abroad. We have to tell our bank we are travelling though as they monitor transactions so use abroad could flag up as suspicious if they are not aware. Have you tried asking your own bank? I'm sure they will be able to advise you or failing that email some of the banks over here and ask them. Shame I didn't see this earlier today as I went into our local bank (well not so local now as the shut the one in Stockton Heath Village so I had to go into Warrington Town centre)....I could have asked in there for you. How on earth did it do that as I never even mentioned my bnaks name and it's never ever done that on this forum before. Evil Sid Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Post offices can be used for debit card withdrawals, if you can find one these days and it is open. my local spar have a post office and also at the side of the tills a machine linked to the post office for when the post office is closed. It can do most post office business apart from a balance check on your account. If your debit card has a chip and Personal identity number (PIN) then providing it is a four digit pin you should be able to use your card anywhere and usually without charge. As dizz says it is worth having a chat with your bank to see if charges abroad will apply. It may be worth letting your bank know that you are going to be using your card abroad just in case they think it has been cloned and block any transactions. Could not say if they charge for "foreign" cards, if i remember when i go to the shop later I will ask them. would advise though not to go to the post office on a monday, pension and benefit payment day so usually crowded with OAP's getting pensions and paying bills etc. and they do love a good natter with the post office counter staff. I think most people on benefits have money paid straight to their off shore accounts. Won't your card be covered by visa or Delta Stallard ? Evil Sid Posted June 22, 2017 Report Share Posted June 22, 2017 Actually remembered to ask the post office staff but they were unsure about even their systems ability to process US cards. Their advice was to ask your bank prior to travelling. They did seem to think though that any charges will be similar to a UK citizen using their card in the EU. If you really want to you could always take advantage of those offers to transfer your full account to a bank account over here. I do my spending money business wth a Credit Union, which is a small, local bank usually associated with oil company. Although they don't venture out of the local area, they tell me that my debit card from them is good worldwide, however I do have to let them know to expect foreign charges. The main point of my question concerned the most usual places to look for ATM's etc.. The last time I was there Moses was a boy and there were no such things as ATM's. I don't even use a debit card in the States, but I see the machines in the casinos. I don't think I will have much luck hunting down a casino every time I need a dollar. I do have a PIN number, which I have already forgotten twice and had to revisit the bank. I now have it tattooed on the bottom of my foot !!
