Not exactly 9/11 - but ....

Big incident in London today, swamping the TV news: sadly some people injured by a car driving into them and a nutter with a knife having a go at a copper, then being shot - but. If this is the reaction of the media to a "guy with a knife"; one wonders what they'll do when the ISIS volunteers start returning to the UK, fully trained and kitted out ?

These kind of "lone wolf" attacks, using the cheapest and most available weapon (a motor vehicle) will no doubt increase, and ISIS will claim each one as part of their franchise. They are almost impossible to prevent, both in terms of identification and prevention. (EG. we can't build barriers along every pavement in the land). What we could do, is recognise that "multi-culturalism" hasn't worked, it has aided and abetted segregation, with some groups suffering an identity crisis and falling for extreme propaganda. Rather than promoting "difference" with "faith" schools, we should be promoting assimilation with science based, secular state schools. As for the more sophisticated terrorists, the security services are fighting a constant battle of prevention, and we may need to accept more intrusion into our privacy and less "freedom", in order to give them a better chance. And, as in this case, an individual is "known" to our security services, could they be placed in preventative custody and deported ?  They'd be swamped with an army of liberal HR lawyers and liberal lefty protests.

I can understand the imam's concern "tarred with the same brush" seems to be the phrase that comes to mind the innocent suffering for the guilty, which just fuels the fire.

weeding out the  "nut jobs" isn't as easy. Family will stick up for family, no matter how bad they are, a formula which applies to all people. How often do we here the phrases "oh he/she had a poor upbringing" or "he/she has mental issues" as a defence for some wrongdoing or other and the ever popular "they are only picking on me because i am (White/black, an ethnic minority, gay/lesbian/transgender etc etc)"

They might be able to say that a certain person is a bit extreme in his views but that is not an indication that that person will go out commit mass  murder or other atrocities, Enoch Powell never did and he was considered to have some very extreme views on certain subjects (as does every body if they are honest with themselves).

Whilst that may be a fairly common sense appraisal Sid; it doesn't get us to a preventative strategy.  Family and tribal loyalties may be strong social bonds, that will serve to protect and shield individuals, it doesn't excuse criminal activity.  The social bubbles that exist, that divide people into groups, be it religion or poverty or ignorance; need to be dissipated, rather than reinforced; starting with a State secular Education system.
