Devo-Max ?

Assuming the Scots are canny enough to vote "no", in next week's referendum;  like the E/Ukraine, they'll still aspire for more "independence", short of cutting the financial umbilical cord with the UK. The Westminster Parties have/are promising the Scots more powers if they vote "no"; the so called "Devo-Max" option.  So, like China's cities looking enviously at Hong-Kong; isn't it time for the rest of the UK Regions to look at Scotland and say, " We'll have some of that" ?

Federal UK is coming. Devolution to rest of UK with only parliament dealing with the issues of national importance. England included. Scotland will vote no then push for devo max as will wales and NI. As a result England will get devolution as well. Not a bad thing i think.

A new name for Metropolitan CCs;  and another example of the dog's dinner that's been created in Local Gov.  If Scotland with a population of 5million can seek devolved powers from Westminster, it goes without saying that the N/West with 7million should have equal rights.  After all we probably have more in common with the Scots than we do with the Home Counties.

Perhaps less politicians Asp; which could easily be achieved at every tier; mind you, the politicians are unlikely to vote, like turkeys for Xmas ! The closure of Government Departments in London and their tasks allocated to the regions, would create some employment north of Watford Gap. As for Baz's point, sadly it's true; but by bringing real powers down to the lowest optimum level, local Government may appear more relevant to folk and perhaps create some interest from brighter candidates. Nothing strange or revolutionary about a Regional tier of Government, it seems to work well in Germany, and they still have less politicians per capita than we do !
