Yes it’s a well done from me as well.

As for spreading the word, if something on FB has already been discussed here, I usually add a link in the hope of attracting others.

The problem is with a closed door and absent administrators, nobody can’t join in.

    Bill 😊

I check admin every month or so and the system allows people to auto-join unless they are suspected spammers. There are usually at least 20-30 people reading the forum every time I check. There are lots of posts showing up on google searches of Warrington. Hence the forum is still here!

It is a great pity the gospel isn't spreading to a wider involvement , but well done so far.

WE reach between 10,000 to 20,000 readers a day on the main site - so the gospel reaches far and wide - sadly few are interested in forums these days :( Seven active members from what I can see currently :(

my first port of call in the morning to see what has been going on in warrington overnight or not as the case may be. pop back in the evening to see if anything has changed or there is new news to read.

25 years ago i still had hair on top of my head and could boogie with the best of them, or the worst depending on who you talked to.

congratulations to all the team for an excellent service provided and good luck and fortune for the future.

Many thanks for your loyal readership Sid

  4. April sees is celebrating 25 years of Warrington Worldwide online - Where did that time go?

It has been quite a journey and I suspect the forum will be 25 years old in another year or two.

Big thank you to those of you who are still around and have been part of our journey.

Shame social media came along as it certainly impacted the forum - although for finding stuff out from the past this still knocks spots off social media - hence we have kept it going.

More about our 25 years in the link below and some congratulations messages from those we have worked with over the years!

well i will stay loyal to the end Gary, however long that may be.

as for dizzy tell her sid will track her down soon and mither her until she does return......🕵️‍♂️

can't believe that it is 25 years since you started this venture tempus has certainly fuggited.

may be time for a new issue of tee shirts, i still wear mine occasionally but it has shrunk a bit in the wash, at least that is my excuse rather than admit that i have put on a bit of weight over the years....

Thanks Sid - I actually issued an old new t-shirt that I found to our new music correspondent the other day! I will be at the Oktoberfest again this year for any posters who fancy popping in - I can afford a round of five pints!

  6. Just catching up - I am totally against Facebook (but have to use it as a necessary evil for business) as it is a law to itself and actually wants me to pay them to distribute a free news service. For me Facebook is best for just family stuff and posting pictures of what you are eating. Not really the place for serious debate.

I am already a member of far too many groups - obviously, if you want to start your own private Warrington chat group that's up to you.

The forum will be staying open until at least the end of the year as we evaluate what we are doing to celebrate 25 years of providing a free news service and launch our ambassadors.

From past experience, everyone I know who has been involved in setting up a specific group on Facebook ends up having problems. Few are now run by the people who actually set them up.

Facebook posts also don't get picked up as well by google and there is a fair chunk of history on here now that would be a shame to lose.

P.S Dizzy keeps saying she is going to come back - so those connected with her on facebook need to give her a poke!

Hi @Gary, Please could you let me know if Historic England could have permission to use two images from the thread, if we do some publicity about the stones? One would be the photo posted by @Joe on p4 showing the one outside the Springbrook pub in Grappenhall being sat on. If he can tell us the source I would ask them direct. The other would be the historic drawing of one in use posted by @Dizzy on p4; I have searched the British Newspaper Archive in vain for the issue of the Warrington Guardian that this came from - I wonder if it might have been the Warrington Daily Guardian instead, which isn't in there for the relevant years. If she has a clean copy we could have I'd be very grateful! Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated, I'm trying to get info together for our media people before the end of this week if possible, sorry :) Thanks, Crispin

Sorry Crispin - only just seen this as been away and then busy catching up. I doubt there would be an issue using the images as long as they are credited and they have been put in public domain on here.

    That’s exactly what I did although I don’t think it’ll last forever.

I think I might have said this before, but some of the blokes I occasionally chat to down at the pub are paying nearly £120 per month in subscription charges so they never miss any of their beloved sports programming. Try and have a conversation about anything other than football and you may as well be talking to yourself. I think they’re all crazy paying what they do to binge on sport but they’re happy with what they do.

I’ve though a lot about this in recent months and have come to the conclusion that pay for view is like a Big Mac while Freeview is more school dinners. I’m not going to labour this analogy suffice to say that set times meals with a varied diet is better for you than an all-day happy meal.

    Bill 😊

I'm one of those blokes in the pub you speak to lol !

Seems our NHS has taken on the role of a kind of religion, with a special service being held on it's 75th anniversary, allowing the politicians to virtue signal in spades.  But they all deny the fact that the NHS isn't fit for purpose, and has become an insatiable consumer of funding, allowing it's managers to engage in a range of non-essential expenditure and expectation fulfilment.    We're now in a position where initial access into the system requires an 8am phone call to your GP and a phone queue of up to 20 people or in an emergency a trip to A&E and hours of waiting to be seen.   The NHS can be seen as a victim of it's own success, in the sense that modern medicine allows the technology and innovation to promise resolutions to a whole range of issues, some of which could not be described as life threatening.  So perhaps the starting place for reform is to decide the scope and scale of it's mission, should it be in effect an Inter-National Health Service, treating foreign visitors, should it be involved in gender reassignment surgery or fertility treatments ?    Should the numbers and salaries and woke activities of it's over staffed managers be curtailed ?   Add to this the need, with an aging population the need for a functional care service.   The one thing that should be sacred imo, is the principle that access to the NHS should be free at the point of need,  which makes the comment of Tony Blair "that folk should be allowed to pay to jump the queue" so distasteful  and revealing of his political beliefs.

The big question is why does no other country have an NHS like ours? Answer - it, unfortunately, doesn't work properly.

For the last few years, we’ve had access to Netflix on the basis that we were a family member of the account holder, but last week we were greeted by a screen informing us that things had changed, and we now need to have our own account to continue viewing. Since then, I’ve heard that several others have experienced the same.

We’ve never been big watchers of Netflix and only ever used it occasionally if there was nothing interesting on the normal channels, but we certainly wouldn’t pay extra for the privilege. The problem was that my wife was halfway through watching a series, something she didn’t normally do, so she wasn’t a happy bunny. She managed to watch through to the end of the series by clicking the button saying, “I’m away from home.” It’s still working over a week later, but I suspect we’re on borrowed time.

    Bill 😊

It was easy to get around the issue Bill - all you needed to do was speak to the family member you share with and tell them to expect an email to authorise and boom - back on instantly :)

  11. While we wouldn't allow a forum member to address another on here with such language it would appear a significant number of people think it is Ok for an elected MP to RE tweet the f word about your opposition.

Personally, I wouldn't use the f word full stop as an insult to anyone or any organisation - but maybe I am just old school and too polite. I'd rather have a healthy debate and walk away from the table still on speaking terms with anyone I disagreed with (Bill) ;)

    What do others think ?

Dizzy must have completely changed her appearance or arrived incredibly late because it seems I missed her.

It was nice to put some faces to the names I often see and thanks again to Gary for organising a nice little get together.

    Bill 😊

Dizzy rolled up as we were leaving - gave me a pressie and hug and then cleared off - she was sorry to miss you

  13. Good to catch up with Bill and Dizzy earlier in the week at a small gathering of Warrington Worldwide Facebook faithful - almost like one of the old poster meet ups although Bill was less grumpy than normal :)

Dizzy was late but I got a nice hug and birthday pressie - thank you.

Dizzy is frantically trying to log in tonight but struggling to find how to log in on a mobile - Does anyone else use a mobile to post on the forum? I only use desk top.

I did an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) run of the site and what it complained about wasn't obviously about the forum, the URLS were mainly astrology junk and somehow in the main pages.

The about this forum is that you can create the topic of  discussion with a level playing field, that is not possible on the other local sites and it will not get you very far on Faceache either.

Hopefully you can see significant improvements now

No sunshine today so I can’t do any work on my battery charging circuit, plus I’ve pulled a back muscle so it might be a forum day for me.

Facebook doesn’t like links on their site that divert people away. From a business point of view, I get that, but in the case of WWW, there shouldn’t be any huge difference as the same click revenue is available on both. Tweaking the adds won’t do much, if as you say there’s only the five of us here.

As a money-making exercise, a forum will never make anyone rich but there are many positive aspects which if controlled could enhance visitor experience and be beneficial to WWW. This takes effort though and Gary has always maintained he’s too busy. It might explain why he’s been reluctant to promote the forum, but it doesn’t explain why all offers of help have been turned down.

    Bill 😊

Hi Bill - I am sure you understand as a businessman you can not let people who are not part of your business run anything connected to your business - especially something which could involve serious legal implications.

P.S I am still very busy improving my work-life balance. Hopefully, see you in October if not before! Maybe all five of us! The drinks are on me!
